Summary

Long before Sean Chiplock understood what voiceover was, he was already practicing the craft without even realizing it. Growing up in the prime era of Nintendo 64 and similar consoles/games that featured expressive characters but no voices, he and his younger brother would often ‘mock-dub’ entire games as they played, assigning roles and portraying a plethora of different vocal archetypes to enhance their gaming experience. Now, many years later, Sean adds an ever-growing resume of professional performances to his (continuing) hobby of voicing the voiceless in his spare time. After becoming both the youngest winner to-date – and first male Champion – of BangZoom!’s “AX Idol” voiceover competition in 2009, Sean finished up his education at Western Michigan University until 2012 before moving out shortly afterwards to develop himself further in California.

From there, his dedication to self-improvement – alongside several years of patient progress – combined with his passion for the craft to expand his portfolio farther than he ever thought possible. His current most notable accomplishment includes becoming the voices of Revali, Teba, and Deku Tree in Nintendo’s critically acclaimed hit The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but it is far from his only success; projects like Re:Zero (Subaru Natsuki), Persona 5 (Mishima Yuuki), DanganRonpa V3 (Monotaro), Mortal Kombat 11 (Noob Saibot), Trails of Cold Steel (Rean Schwarzer), and Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Hummel) can also be found on his resume, as well as big-name clients like Microsoft, PepsiCo., GAMESTOP, Mattel, Nickelodeon, and Disney-Pixar/Disney Parks. He is now represented by SBV Talent, and has been cast in commercial advertisements and social-media videos for Disney, Mattel, ABC Family, and more. Online, he may be known for his Undertale-related ‘parody projects’ such as Papyrus Makes a Mixtape, Skelemoon, Pafriskus, etc.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the love of gaming never left, and Sean continues to enjoy an active community role in games such as Super Smash Bros. (as one of the nation’s top-performing Mega Man players) while also regularly sharing his love for series like Mega Man Battle Network, Etrian Odyssey, and pretty much every dungeon crawler or Monster Collection game on the market. With a soft spot for animals, and a hard work ethic, Sean spends each day looking for that prime balance of Professionalism vs. Play – and always keeps at least one eye open for that next voiceover opportunity

What advice would you give your younger self?

Make up more time for self-care and just enjoy life. Nowadays it’s all about grades and
paychecks, so much that we forget that money is not the only valuable object in life. No
amount of success and praise is going to replace the time spent with friends and family,
however insignificant it might seem. Last but not least, you need to realise that you have
worth and do not need to prove it to anyone. There are going to be people doubting such
worth, and you will have to walk away and find your own path. Don’t be afraid to cut toxic
relationships off your life, you will be much better off.

All the people that surround me, especially friends, think I have a perfect life and I have a
very stable mental health. They have this false perception that being successful, let’s say
being on the very top in University, means being happy and thus they tie their own worth to
the amount of success they have. This is a very toxic perception that we all should discard. I
learned the hard way that being on the top doesn’t mean anything and it never will. Real
happiness comes from within.

In my free time I love to practice pilates, yoga and physical exercise in general. It is such a
good way to “be in the moment” and disconnect from everything else.

When I can, I take long walks in nature and listen to hours and hours of music, which is one
of my deepest passions. My hobbies also include streaming video games online and reading a
great variety of books. Pretty much every topic makes me curious to learn more. Right now
I’m in the middle of a scientific book about weather, and I can’t wait to discover new things
about it!

How do you handle stress or upsetting situations?

I used to be very bad at handling both stress and upsetting situations. After years of unhelpful
choices in this regard, I came up with what I call an “Emergency plan”.

As soon as I feel stressed or upset, I open and read the plan. It is made up of questions to
answer and tasks to perform, so it is easy to follow in such delicate situations. There are a
total of eight steps to follow.

First one is understanding if the environment is safe, so I basically ask myself if there is a
real, physical threat to which I’m reacting. Step two is recognising the type of emotional
distress I am feeling. These vary from person to person, I personally find myself having either
depressive or PTSD episodes. It is very important to realise what kind of situation we are in,
because different emergencies require different solutions. I also ask myself to rate the
intensity of the distress, which is important to reframe the situation and also understand if
there is the need to reach out to trained professionals on the spot.

For PTSD episodes, distractions are the key. So my emergency plan will recommend reaching
out to a friend or close person so I get a distraction from it. The less I think about it, the
better.

In case of depressive episodes, there are a few steps more to follow. I have a standardised
message I send to my close ones saying that I won’t respond to any texts because I am
struggling with my mental health and I need to work on it, which means I need space. In
order to get through I use a specific mental health App and perform a few simple tasks, like drinking water and brushing my teeth, that help me feel better. I also find it very relaxing to
put my feet in hot water and listen to some piano music. I repeat the tasks until I feel better.

I really think everybody should have their own plan, tailored for their needs. I had to try a
couple of times before getting it right, but eventually it became so useful that I am not afraid
of having a difficult situation anymore.
